I would like to express my gratitude to a young man I’ve not had the pleasure to meet, and recognize his heroic efforts. You see, Jarred Stratton, 14 years old, rescued my very dear friend during a recent flash flood at Kipu Falls.
My friend, Carolyn, was visiting from Arizona and enjoying Kipu Falls with her family when she was swept over the falls when a flash flood caught everyone by surprise.
Falling approximately 20 feet and breaking her foot on impact, she was then held under the water by the force of the flood.
She managed to surface, and it was then that Jarred, who did not know Carolyn at all, risked his own life by swinging out on a rope and getting into the raging water to bring Carolyn to safety.
I am very proud of this young man and commend him for showing that this level of caring is alive and well in our young people.
From what I’ve heard of the events of that day, many people there also performed heroic deeds, thinking of others, risking their own safety to assure the safety of all.
Fortunately, no lives were lost that day.
Their experience can serve to remind us all to be aware and prepared for flash floods and to always take safety precautions.
Hopefully, any of us, in a similar situation, would exhibit the same high quality of character.
I commend all of you who were there that day, and especially Jarred for allowing the best in you to rise to the occasion. God bless you all.
