Hallelujah. There’s a new generation of young people conscious of-and largely for-gun control.
According to a survey designed by a sociology professor at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., nine out of 10 high school students support gun-control measures. Criminal background checks and mandatory trigger locks are protections favored by 1,000 students who were popped the question during a three-day nationwide phone poll in June.
It apparently isn’t just anti-gun rhetoric that shaped their thinking. Add the fact that about a quarter of the students, or someone close to them, have been shot. It could also have something to do with the spate of horrific shootings in schools. And don’t forget that students everywhere have grown up influenced by actual or dramatized gunplay in various forms of media and entertainment. Depending on where they live, they might also face the fear of firearm violence each day.
Young people in favor of gun control bodes well for the future. A society that sees the sanity in prevention can look forward to perhaps some day raising children who don’t have to worry about guns.
