It becomes obvious that nobody on The Garden Island staff has lived on the island longer than three weeks. For your information, the state (and county) used the election equipment from ES&S in the last election two years ago. It has thus been four years since we voted on punchcards. Hardly newsworthy of a front page story (July 28, “Hawai’i gets new way of counting votes”).
Not only did the new ballots (which had to be marked with special pens and fed into a relatively cranky ballot box and reader contraption) slow down the voting process, but there was enough doubt concerning the accuracy to lead to a complete recount statewide, paid for by ES&S. There have been other recent compaints filed against this company, but I am sure it would be too much trouble to look such things up in your news references. Perhaps ES&S is a big advertiser in other Pulitzer community papers?
Our state bureaucratic clowns chose to repeat the experience for at least four elections at a cost of $10 million. It is great fun to see your paper put this puffery piece (no doubt provided by ES&S) as front page news.
We are all so lucky.
