I note there was a meeting at Kaua’i Community College July 31 which I unfortunately could not attend. I hope all of you who care about Kauai’s reefs went to the meeting and emphasized the importance of protecting not only the reefs of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, but our reefs.
First, speak up against the taking of small reef fish for aquariums. It is outrageous that this practice is allowed to continue. I have not seen a single kili kili this summer, for example. Four years ago, there were hundreds.
Second, make sure no one is allowed to remove coral, whether it is legal or not to do so. Large signs would help.
Third, somebody please suggest that we return to the traditional Hawaiian system of placing a kapu on any area which is overfished until the fish return.
Fourth, we need badly a marine preserve on Kaua’i.
Why don’t we have a single one?
