KAHILI—Just days after firefighters asked for the public’s help dealing with
local brush fires, a large brush fire erupted Sunday.
This fire, six miles
west of Lihu’e just past Halfway Bridge and just before the cut in the Kahili
Mountains, started at 2 p.m. According to Kaua’i Fire Department officials,
firefighters battled the blaze until 8 p.m.
Monday morning, firefighters
were back out again to deal with hot spots.
Campers at Kahili Mountain
Park, a recreational campground, reported they could still see smoke from the
fire Monday morning.
The amount of land involved in the fire wasn’t
reported Monday morning.
The fire followed a four-acre blaze that nearly
reached Kaua’i High School last Thursday afternoon.
After Thursday’s fire,
battalion chief Ernest Moniz Jr. asked people to contact local fire stations to
discuss how to protect their areas.
“Every summer, we have less rain and
every summer brush fires go up,” Moniz said.
