I recently returned to the mainland from my first visit to Hawai’i. I stayed on Kaua’i, and many people told me that if I could visit only one island, Kaua’i would be the one to pick. The scenery is truly breathtaking and the people I encountered were patient, courteous and gentle. It is a vacation destination I would readily recommend to anyone-with one disclaimer, however.
The state parks, in large part, are in a sad state of affairs. To be more honest, they are deplorable. Parking is severely inadequate for the volume of traffic, trails are poorly maintained to the point of being dangerous, restroom facilities are non-existent or potential health hazards, signage is lacking to ensure visitor safety, and the health of natural resources, to name a few concerns.
Without proper attention and funding for Hawaii’s state park system, the tourists directed to these beautiful locations will in the end be the ones who destroy them. What a loss for all of us, especially for the people who call Hawai’i home.
