am responding to a letter submitted to The Garden Island by Robert W. Yount of
Koloa (Sept. 12, “LWV should apologize for panel discussion”) that objected to
an editorial about the League of Women Voters and its educational
activities.It has been two years, and time and emotion may have clouded
and distorted Mr. Yount’s memory of what actually occurred. No panel members
were “last-minute” or “stacked.” In August 1998, the League confirmed a panel
for the October event, “Constitutional Amendment Questions.” The purpose was to
create community dialogue on all proposed constitutional amendments that would
appear on the ballot.
The question on whether to have a constitutional
convention was discussed, as well as the same-sex marriage amendment. There was
open dialogue and questions from the audience were encouraged. There was no
“conclusion” reached on either the con-con issue or any other, just information
from all sides in a fair and open forum. The League will not apologize for
doing its job by encouraging citizens to become more informed voters.
The
League has been encouraging education and open dialogue on important community
issues for decades, particularly when our government process is involved. Since
1972, the local chapter has coordinated voter guides.
All are welcome to
attend the Sept. 16, 1 p.m. meeting at Lilhu’e Christian Church to assist with
defining questions for the coming general election voter guide.
