Though the Kaua’i High School varsity fell short of victory at its
homecoming Friday night, Red Raiders’ football fans still had something to
cheer about.
Before the elders took the field, the Kaua’i youngsters
recorded their first win of the jayvee season, sticking it to Kapa’a
29-6.
Prior to Friday night, the Red Raiders had scored just nine points
all season. They got that in the first quarter against the Warriors. Kaua’i
then tacked on 13 in the second period and six in the fourth to end its
scoring.
The Raiders also got a solid effort from their defense. Kaua’i
yielded the six points in the first quarter to Kapa’a before stymieing the
Warriors the rest of the way.
Aaron Coyaso got the Raiders on the board
midway through the first quarter when he booted a 34-yard field goal. Fourteen
seconds later, following a Kapa’a turnover, quarterback Levi Fajardo found
Justin Arakaki on a 22-yard scoring strike. Coyaso tacked on the extra point
for a 10-0 Kaua’i lead.
Kapa’a got its lone score late in the first quarter
when Kanalu Hawelu ran in for a one-yard TD.
The second quarter nearly went
scoreless until Kaua’i’s Aren Racca scored from a yard out at the 1:47 mark.
Less than a minute later, Fajardo found Apakaki on a 22-yard strike. Coyaso
added the point after for a 23-6 Raiders’ lead at the half.
Racca tacked on
a touchdown with time running out of the game to seal the
scoring.
