last Sunday’s 49th Annual Bank of Hawaii Hinano Molokai Hoe. The seniors (45
and older) finished in a time of 5:27:31, and were the fastest canoe from the
island of Kaua’i.
Oahu’s Lanikai broke the race record to win the overall
competition, considered the world championship of outrigger canoeing. Lanikai
finished in a time of 4:50:31, nearly eight minutes ahead of its closest
competitor, Team New Zealand/Hawaii.
Paddlers had to battle seas of up to
12 feet and winds nearing 30 knots as they crossed the Molokai Channel. The
race included 110 canoes, and finished at Oahu’s Duke Kahanamoku
Beach.
