Beachgoers and Kaua’i County lifeguards saved the life of a 74-year-old man
swimming near Po’ipu Wednesday morning.
“This was minutes – maybe seconds –
from being a tragedy,” said county fire chief David Sproat.
The swimmer was
about 50 yards from the shore at Po’ipu Beach at 10:30 when he began thrashing
in the water, authorities said.
Another swimmer assisted him and other
witnesses alerted lifeguards. After the man was brought ashore, lifeguards Roy
Yamagata and Myles Emura rendered medical aid until county firefighters from
the Koloa station arrived. He was taken later to Wilcox Memorial Hospital,
where he was expected to make a full recovery, officials said.
His name was
not released.
“Thanks to the quick action all involved, we have a happy
ending,” Sproat said.
