For a while this week, it looked like Kaua’i High School was becoming one of
this year’s state powerhouses in volleyball.
The Raiders’ boys’ and girls’
teams reached the quarterfinals of the state prep tournament in Honolulu,
creating a stir on their home island. Could they take the final two steps to
the championships? Was this their year?
Alas, both squads lost their
quarterfinal matches. But what a season. Right down to the end, the players
supplied their fans and themselves with a steady stream of thrills and success
that gave their school a prominent spot on the map of Hawai’i interscholastic
volleyball. As coach Richard Roberts said after the girls’ team bowed out in
Honolulu, the Raiders “proved to themselves they can compete.”
