The growth of the Sears store at Kukui Grove Center and the blossoming of the weekly farmers’ market at the shopping mall has resulted in a new, permanent move inside for the market.
Produce, flowers and other commodities straight off the farms are still sold each Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. The market had been held in the parking lot between the former Woolworth location (now the expanded Sears) and the nearby park and pavilion. But the growth of both have necessitated the move inside the mall, said J Robertson, marketing and promotions director for Kukui Grove.
Sears needs the parking and the farmers need the space, so the move was made, he explained.
The farmers are now lining the center entrance near Star Market and the mall management office.
With 50 vendors, the booths extend nearly to the center-stage area.
“We want to help the farmers,” and the new arrangement also helps the mall by creating more shopper traffic, Robertson said.
There is no room for any new vendors, but if there are people interested in becoming vendors or getting more information about the farmers’ market, they can call Roberston at 245-7784.
