Sausage sales will boost Lydgate expansion
“Five bucks, four hours,” a fund-raising campaign for the Kamalani 2001 Committee, got a boost when committee members announced the kickoff of an islandwide Portuguese sausage sale that would benefit the expansion of Lydgate Park Project Kamalani 2001.
Ten-ounce Purity Brand portuguese sausage will be available at all Big Save stores, where patrons will redeem tickets purchased from committee members or site sales from Feb. 1 through April 30. Each ticket, for a $6 donation, allows the holder to select two Purity products.
Lydgate Park is a major recreational site for residents and visitors alike, and the goal of the Kamalani 2001 Committee is to expand it.
Kaua’i County has allocated space within the park for shoreline access, camping and sports fields. The area encompasses approximately 50 acres and is located to the south of Lydgate’s developed areas, including the Kamalani Playground.
MDG Inc., a nationally recognized design firm specializing in trails and parks, will work with Leathers & Associates Inc. to design the new area. The committee envisions sports fields, group and family campgrounds, bicycle and pedestrian paths featuring a bridge, shoreline fishing and parking for anglers, new pavilion and viewing decks, durable art featuring historic themes, educational signs, landscaping utilizing native plants, and working with the park’s neighbors in developing the project.
Because thousands of people are needed to help, the committee is banking on the concept of community participation such as when hukilau, barn raisings, and quilting bees were part of the fabric of life.
No special skills are needed, according to the committee, and volunteers of all ages are needed.
Troy Waialeale and Tim Bynum are the general coordinators for the committee, with YWCA of Kaua`i providing the accounting and bookkeeping services.
Wendy Benton and Monica Ka’awai are heading up the childcare committee, with Laurel Brier, Joy Kouchi and Mary Nakamura in charge of the children’s committee.
Doug Haig serves as the county liason, with Stan Yates in charge of design and special needs.
Loki Merkel and Graeme Merrin head up the food committee, with Joe Prendergast and Wayne Soma in charge of fund-raising.
Doug Neilsen heads up the long-term maintenance phase, with Ron Wiley managing public relations, Randy Weir in charge of purchased materials and Allen Brewer, Bill Cowern and Thomas Noyes rounding up the tools.
Mary Borath, John Lydgate and Dale Rosenfeld are coordinating the volunteers.
