Kaua’i County Police chief investigator Melvin Morris said Thursday that a preliminary investigation has confirmed that the body discovered Tuesday morning on Kalalau Beach was a suicide.
Morris said an autopsy performed by coroner Dr. Anthony Manoukian yesterday concluded the death wounds were self-inflicted to the neck area.
Morris said the autopsy substantiated the Police Department’s investigation in the field.
But police still don’t know the white male, who authorities said was in his late 30s to early 40s.
“An investigation will continue to establish identity and notify next of kin,” Morris said.
Police initially classified the death as unexplained and would not speculate on the cause following the body’s discovery from the air Tuesday. A helicopter pilot saw an SOS in the sand and alerted police, who flew to the remote site by helicopter that day and returned to the scene Wednesday to interview individuals and search for clues.
