Day 6
On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano. By initiating the strike, Hawai’i has become the first state to have union workers shut down its entire public-education system.
HSTA News
The state Board of Education said Wednesday that striking public school teachers are entitled to continued health fund benefits. Cayetano has said the benefits should be cut off because he considers the teachers to be on unauthorized absence. But the board held it considers them as being on authorized leave without pay.
UHPA News
State negotiator Davis Yogi said the state and the UHPA remain split on the teaching workload at community colleges and lecturers’ fees — issues on which the university administration was preparing a proposal.
