On April 5, Hawaii’s 13,000 public school teachers and 3,200 public university faculty members walked off the job after failing to reach an agreement on salary talks with Gov. Ben Cayetano. By initiating the strike, Hawai’i has become the first state to have union workers shut down its entire public-education system.

Public school teachers returned to picket lines Wednesday, the ninth day of missed classes for 180,000 public school students. Talks with the state were to resume later in the day. Grades from kindergarten to twelfth grade have been shut down since April 5.

University of Hawai’i professors have agreed on a new labor contract, ending an eight-day strike that had kept more than 40,000 college students out of classes. Classes at the state university’s 10 campuses were expected to resume Thursday.
