All seven of the Kaua’i County Council members agree that access to beaches is a fine idea in principle, but they are debating how people should get to them in the real world.
The council is still trying to choose between two beach-access proposals, one of which mandates access to accompany each new subdivision, and one which suggests the Planning Commission can decide on a case-by-case basis.
Councilman Gary Hooser said he hopes the council will vote on that at its meeting Thursday at 9 a.m., and “I am going to be voting for the ‘shall’ (mandated access) option.”
The council will also discuss again Secret Beach and disputed accesses to three beaches.
“I’m hoping we can get that resolved, too,” Hooser said.
A new property owner in the area has tried to alter the access local people have used for years.
