Kapa’a youngster selected to attend prestigious soccer camp
This Summer Mariko Strickland, a Kapa’a Middle School 2001 graduate, came one step closer to fulfilling her dream of playing for the United States Women’s National Soccer team.
She was selected to attend the U.S. Soccer Under-14 Girls National Team Development Camp at Deerfield Academy, Mass.
To be selected for the National Camp, Strickland attended Olympic Development Program tryouts in Hawai’i and was selected to the state team. She then travelled to Idaho for the Far West Region tryouts in July. Teams represented all western states, including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Hawai’i.
Strickland was one of 24 girls selected from this group to attend the National Camp.
Meeting U.S. Women’s National Team member Kristine Lilly was the highlight of the National Camp. Lilly was a member of the women’s World Cup team.
Strickland is 14 years old and is currently attending High School at Mid Pacific Institute on Oahu and is the daughter of Greg & Sue Strickland of Kapa’a.
Additionally, Christian Marston qualified for the U-16 regional pool, a high achievement for a Kaua’i soccer player. He underwent the same qualifying procedure as Strickland, and was selected for the regional pool. In Idaho, he was just one step short of making it to the National Camp.
Marston is a Junior at Kapa’a High School and played Kapa’a High varsity soccer last year. He is the son of Christian & Nani Marston of Kilauea.
