The Kaua’i Red Raider girl’s soccer team showcased a speedy offensive attack last night at Vidinha Stadium, a primary reason they shutout the Waimea Menehunes 4-0 in the first game of KIF play.
The Menehunes tried a rough approach to stopping the Red Raiders’ speedy forwards, committing a total of 12 fouls in the contest.
But Kaua’i couldn’t be stopped.
The Red Raiders didn’t blow any opportunities, and it proved to be the ultimate deathknell for the Menehunes.
A Menehune hand-ball gave Janee Correia a direct kick opportunity mid-way through the first half, and she would nail it to put the Red Raiders up 1-0.
Kaua’i received another opportune moment-this time a corner kick-towards the end of the first half. Kaua’i’s Amber Santos would help capitalize, sailing the ball in front of the net and hitting teammate Holly Iloreta for the second score of the game: 2-0.
Santos got the perfect assist from that play, but she wasn’t through.
In the second, half, Santos was awarded a direct kick-this one from a foul in the box call-and scored a left-side corner shot that put the Red Raiders up 3-0.
Chelsea Pabo widened the gap later in the period, knocking in a pretty runner towards the end of the game to tally the final score: 4-0.
The score wasn’t any indication the Menehunes weren’t playing good soccer. They were tough throughout, especially as the clock dwindled towards the end of the second half.
But the Red Raiders capitalized on Menehune mistakes, and that was the ultimate difference.
“I think our team is on track, right now,” said Red Raider Coach Blanche Arakaki, who mentioned she subbed players throughout the game to get a good look at her talent. “Our defense is tough and we have a really strong team. So far, I am pleased with what we have.”
