EHUKAI BEACH, O’ahu – Bruce Irons of Hanalei is the winner of the Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters title at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.
On Monday Irons beat six times Association of Surfing Professionals world champion, two times Triple Crown champion and five times Pipe Masters champion Kelly Slater into second place by a mere 0.55 points, posting a heat score of 24.10 points (out of a possible 30 points) to Slater’s 23.55 points.
Irons pocketed $30,000 in prize money. Newly crowned ASP world champion CJ Hobgood of Florida and 19 year old Jamie Obrian of Hawaii were beaten into third and fourth place respectively.
The Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters is the final event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing held on the North Shore of Oahu. Irons’ brother Andy Irons won the first event of the Triple Crown of Surfing with a win at Hale’iwa.
