The Waimea Menehunes boys team and the Kapa’a Warrior girls team won the 2002 KIF Track and Field Championship on a windy Friday at Vidinha Stadium.
The Kaua’i Red Raiders placed second for the boys, the Kapa’a Warriors came in third, Island School took fifth, and Kula came in sixth.
For the girls, the Red Raiders placed second and the Waimea Menehunes took third.
The final high school track meet also hosted two record-breaking feats in high jumps by Kapa’a’s Jackie Huttger and Cale Forsen. Huttger, who took first place in four events on Friday, recorded a 5-foot, 1 inch jump, which topped the previous KIF record of 4-feet, 11 inches, set by Waimea’s Leah Karrati in 1992.
And Forsen, who leaped to 6-feet, 2.5 inches, broke a previous record set by a fellow Kapa’a graduate Josh Davis (6’2″) in 1995.
Field Events: In Discus, Waimea’s Kaina Makua took top honors with a 126’10 1/2″ long throw. Kaua’i’s Bronson Zeffiro and Waimea’s Abraham Makua followed. For the girls Discus, Menehune Erin Castillo topped the KIF with a launch of 112-feet, 3-inches. She edged Red Raiders Ashley Tanaka and Kyrie Simeona.
Castillo also won the Shot Put, throwing a distance of 32-feet, 31/2 inches. She was followed by Tanaka in second, and Chelsey Ueno in third.
Waimea’s Abe Apilado won the Shot Put for the boys, with a 45-feet, 87/8 inch throw. Makua took second and Kapa’a’s Vincent Dora finished third in the event.
Other than the High Jump, Huttger also won the Long Jump, with a distance of 15 feet, 51/4 inches. Teammate Tiana Laranio took second in the event; Waimea’s Robyn Arrington took third. For the boys, Red Raider Bronson Zeffiro leaped 20-feet, one inch to grab Long Jump honors. He was followed by Waimea’s James Marques and Timmy Chang-Wo.
Kaua’i’s Lionel Tomacder amd Waimea’s Winnie Arios followed in Forsen’s record breaking feat for the High Jump. Kapa’a’s Danielle Hill and Sharlene Carillo came second and third to Huttger’s record jump.
Track Events: Jerrick Fabro, who scorched the day with four first place finishes, won the Triple Jump with a 42-feet, 41/2 inch leap. Kaua’i’s Jonathon Arakaki and Justin Arakaki took second and third.
Huttger kept her win streak going with a 32-feet, 1/2 inch leap in the girls Triple Jump. Tiana Laranio took second; Raider Kyle Simeona came third.
Fabro’s second victory came in the 110-meter Hurdles. He finished with a 15.94, above the Raider’s Arakaki duo.
Heavy favorite Kandace Cummings took top honors in the 110-meter Hurdles for girls, with the time of 16.96. Kapa’a’s Shenelle DePeralta and Laranio followed.
Fabro also finished on top of the 300-meter Inter Hurdles with a 41.81, followed by Dustin Maglinti and Christian Cook, who notched second and third in the event.
Cummings took the gold in the 300-meter Inter Hurdles for the KIF girls, finishing with the time of 50.14. Warrior Hayley Ham Young and Waimea’s Ann Gucwa Bucasas followed in the event.
Warrior Elizabeth Kain sprinted to a 12.96 in the 100-meter dash to take first place. Teammate Sharlene Carillo came second and Waimea’s Alicia Phillips took third in the event.
For the boys 100-meter, Waimea’s Evan Agor took first with the time of 11.34. He beat out Menehune Kyle Yokoyama and Kapa’a’s Gabe Sarsona.
Kapa’a’s Sharlene Carillo won the 200-meter dash over Britnee Boeder and Amber Santos. She did it in the time of 27.17.
Agor notched his second win in the 200-meter, topping Maglinti and James Marques with a 23.49.
Marques scorched the 400-meter dash in 52.12. Raiders Kevin Cadiente and Jason Sahara rounded the top three in the event. Madison Perry came through with a 1:04.31 in the 400 for girls, edging ——-.
In distance events, it was a Shauna Tachibana and Mario Rosa party.
Kaua’i’s Tachibana won the 800 (2:47.44), the 1500 (5:42.44) and the 3000 (12.42.87). Liana Nakazawa took second in the 3000, Danielle Williams was runner-up in the 800 and the 1500.
Rosa, of Island School, won two of the distance runs: the 1500 (4.41.39) and the 3000 (11.04.04). Cody Kimura took top honors for the 800-meter run, winning in 2:20.05.
In terms of relays, the Kapa’a (52.97) groups of Huttger, Carillo, Laranio and Cain won the 400-meter event. Waimea took second and Kaua’i took third. For the boys 400-meter relay, Waimea’s crew of Arios, Chang-Wo, Agor and Yokoyama took top honors with a 45.12. Kaua’i and Waimea followed.
In the 1600-meter relay, Waimea’s Fabro, Yokoyama, Agor and Marques came in first with a 3:42.75. They were followed by Kaua’i in second, and Kapa’a in third. And for the girls, the Warrior team with Phillips, Kaona, Kain and Williams took top honors with a 4:29.28. Kaua’i and Waimea took second and third.
The full list of qualifying athletes who are heading to states will be printed prior to the State Championship meet.
