If you are planning to run for public office on Kaua’i this election year, 4:30 p.m. on July 23 is of importance to you.
That is the deadline for filing nomination papers for all county, state and federal offices with the Kaua’i County election’s division office in the historic County Building.
Because of a new law, candidates for the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs must also file for their candidacy on that date, according to the state Office of Elections.
Candidates statewide are encouraged to file earlier than the closing date so that they may deal with contingencies, including inadequate number of signatures to run for office, election officials said.
For federal offices, the state Board of Education and OHA offices, 25 signatures of registered voters are needed. For state and county offices, 15 signatures of registered voters are needed.
People running for public office also are asked to file their nomination papers early to avoid problems with failure to file the “campaign spending affidavit of compliance form” for discounted filing fees or incorrect payment, election officials said.
Nomination papers for county, state and federal offices are available at the election divisions office of the county clerk’s office from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
