KALAPAKI – Team Hanalei won the overall team title at the 2002 Kaua’i Jr. Lifeguard Championships, which took place mid-summer at Kalapaki Beach Park in Lihue.
The competition preceded the State Championships on Oahu in early Aug. The State results were printed in an earlier edition of TGI.
Team Hanalei ended with a total score of 98.5 points, edging second place Team Poipu – winners of the Relay award – which ended with 97 points. It was the fourth consecutive overall title for Team Hanalei.
Team Anahola came in third with 44 points.
The outstanding Male and Female Jr. Lifeguards at the competition were: Andrew Segawa, Bethany Hamilton, Fletcher Parker and Amanda Sheppers.

Girls 14-under: In the 1000 Meter Run, Noelani Moller came first, Arial Carlson second, Sadie Ondkean third. In the 200 Meter Swim: Bethany Hamilton came first, Jackie Brady second, Camile Brady third. In the Run/Swim/Run-100 yards, Hamilton again took first, Jackie Brady second, Mea Melamed third. In Flags: Ema Makepa – Foley came first, Moller second, Carlson third.
Boys 14-under: In the 1000-meter run: Chris Foster came first, Kalab Elmore second, Garret Stephen third. In the 200-meter swim: Andrew Segawa took first, Foster second, Dylan Melamed third. In the Run/Swim/Run-100 yard: Segawa took first, Cory Mira second, Foster third. In Flags: Mira took first, Segawa second and Jeremy Fergeson third.
Girls 15-over: In the 1,000-meter run: Liana Nakazawa took first, Lee Rodelo second, Virginia Fajardo third. In the 200-meter swim: Amanda Sheppers took first, Fajardo second, Nakazawa third.
