The Hawaii Agricultural Statistics Service estimates the value of the state’s seed-crop industry at a record-high $32.8 million for the 2001-02 season, with seed corn accounting for $32.3 million, or 98 percent of the total value. The 2001-02 season marks the 11th consecutive year of increase.
Outshipments of seed were estimated to total 6.2 million pounds during the 2001-02 season (November to June are the main shipping months), up 25 percent from the previous record of five million pounds shipped in the 2000-01 season. There are eight seed-crop farms in the state, including Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Waimea, and Syngenta in Kekaha, which grow seed corn and other seed crops.
