It is not very often that a monthly Kaua’i visitor arrival figure of 98,225 is considered bad news.
But the fact is that the July arrival figure for Kaua’i, announced last week by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, is off nearly 9 percent compared to July 2001, although the figure was better than any July of the last 10, with the exception of 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Good news in the arrival figures comes when Kaua’i-only numbers are concerned, with that figure in July of this year (36,660) up 4.4 percent compared to the July 2001 figure (35,104).
Those numbers reflect visitors who come to Kaua’i and stay only on Kaua’i during their Hawaiian vacations.
For the first seven months of this year, some 583,899 visitors came to Kaua’i, a figure down 7.5 percent compared to the 631,454 arrivals during the same period last year.
The Kaua’i-only number for the first seven months this year, 212,333, is off 2.7 percent compared to 218,211 Kaua’i-only arrivals recorded during the same period in 2001.
More good news comes from a continued increase in visitors from the West Coast, the island and state’s most important single geographical area where visitor production is concerned. The area includes Pacific and mountain states.
Not only did the number of U.S. west visitors to Kaua’i increase in July in both total arrivals (47,707, up 4.1 percent) and Kaua’i-only arrivals (26,021, up 9.8 percent), compared to the same month last year, but the increase was enough to push year-to-date U.S. west arrivals to Kaua’i into positive percentages compared to the first seven months of 2001.
For the first seven months this year, 256,642 visitors from the U.S. west area came to Kaua’i, up 0.2 percent compared to 256,083 during the first seven months in 2001.
Kaua’i-only visitors from the U.S. west region, though, were still down 1.3 percent for the first seven months this year, compared to the same period last year, 137,966 to 139,835, respectively.
While domestic arrivals to Kaua’i from all parts of the country were off for the month, first seven months and first seven months for Kaua’i-only visitors, the figure increased for Kaua’i-only visitors in July, up 4 percent to 35,245 from 33,881 in July 2001.
Numbers of international visitors to Kaua’i only were up in July and the first seven months this year, compared to the same periods last year, though down overall for both the month and first seven months this year.
Some 608,284 visitors came to the state in July, down 5.1 percent from 641,233 arrivals in July of last year. For the first seven months, the state greeted 3,716,188 visitors, off 7.8 percent compared to 4,030,314 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2001.
