Carl Steinhart Jr. of Kalaheo, Kauai, died Sept. 1, 2002, at the age of 91.
Born on Sept. 26, 1910, in Stockton, Calif., he was married 51 years to his wife, Dawn Zuckerman Steinhart before she died in 1993.
Moving from Stockton to Kauai in 1976, the Steinharts opened Kahana Ki’i Gallery of Lihue, then Koloa, where the gallery was a catalyst for the local arts scene for 16 successful years, closing in 1991.
Mr. Steinhart was an active member of the Kauai Arts community, serving on the board of the Kauai Concert Association and Kauai Society of Artists and lending support to the original Garden Island Arts Center in Lihue.
He was a lifelong sports enthusiast, swimming and boxing for Stanford University where he graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1932. He enjoyed an active life playing polo, snow skiing, flying glider planes, playing tennis and golf. He was active member of the Kauai Gate Ball Club Hanapepe Chapter until his death.
Mr. Steinhart served in the U. S. Army during World War II, where he was an Operation Officer of the 155mm Battalion in the 71st Division of Patton’s Third Army in Europe.
In Stockton, he worked for Zuckerman Mandeville Inc., a large family farming concern for 15 years as Vice President, leaving to manage Valley Engine Shop for 10 years. He and his wife belonged to Stockton Golf and Country Club, West Lane Tennis Club, Stockton Ski Club and the Stockton Art League.
He is survived by his brother Robert Steinhart of Rossmore, Calif.; his son Trey (Becky) Steinhart of Stockton, Calif.; daughter Sally (Dean) French of Kalaheo and grandchildren, Aimee and Cory French of Kalaheo and Kyle and Austin Steinhart of Stockton.
An informal gathering of friends and dispersion of ashes will be at Kawailoa Bay, Maha’ulepu Beach on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kauai Society of Artists (P.O. box 3344, Lihue, HI 96766) for a memorial award in honor of Dawn and Carl Steinhart for Emerging Artists in the Kauai Community.
