Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono won by a slight margin in Saturday’s statewide Democratic primary election over state Rep. Steve Case and Andy Anderson.
However, on Kaua’i Hirono finished with a much larger lead over Case.
Statewide Hirono took about 40.6 percent of the vote, while Case almost caught her with 39.3 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary. Anderson finished with about 17.6 percent of the vote.
On Kaua’i, final tallies showed Hirono with 6,574 votes and Case with 5,087, with Anderson trailing with 2,205 votes.
Republican gubernatorial primary candidate Linda Lingle easily won both the statewide and Kaua’i vote. On Kaua’i, Lingle received 3,249 votes and in statewide voting by Republicans she received well over 90 percent of the vote.
With Hirono and Lingle facing off in the general election it will mean a women will hold the office of governor for the first time in the history of Hawai’i.
Hirono’s running mate in the general election will be state Sen. Matt Matsunaga, the son of former the late renowned Kaua’i senator Spark Matsunaga of Hanapepe.
Matsunaga won by a wide margin over Donna Ikeda and Clayton Hee, as he did in statewide tallies.
Republican Lingle’s running mate will be former state judge James Duke Aiona. Aiona defeated former television journalist Dalton Tanonaka.
On Kaua’i Aikona held about a 12 percent lead over Tanonaka, very close to his statewide margin.
