Hossegor, France – Kauaians Andy Irons, Keala Kennelly and Rochelle Ballard are currently waiting along the Basque and Landes coasts for the perfect swell to compete in France’s only World Championship Tournament (WCT) – the Quicksilver Pro France (men’s) and the Roxy Pro France (women’s).
The Quiksilver Pro France is the 8th of 12 events on the 2002 ASP World Championship Tour. Among those present will be reigning world champion CJ Hobgood and fellow Floridian Kelly Slater. Local support will be with Miky Picon of Capbreton (Fra), who has been granted a wildcard position.
The Roxy Pro France features the top 17 women on the ASP world tour, the penultimate event of their 2002 season. At stake is $60,000 prizemoney, with $10,000 awarded to first place. Amongst the favorites are four-time consecutive world champions Lisa Andersen (Aus) and reigning holder Layne Beachley (Aus), current ratings leader Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus), and last WCT winner in Portugal, Megan Abubo (Haw).
