Po’ipu: Families up, honeymooners down
Half of all visitors to Po’ipu surveyed in July and August said they intended to stay only on Kaua’i, according to a representative of the Po’ipu Beach Resort Association. Over half (54 percent) of the 350 parties that responded to the survey came from California, compared to 45 percent in the summer 2000 survey.
In 2002, more booked their reservation via the Internet, 15 percent versus 10 percent in 2000. Honeymooners made up only 10 percent of the total this summer, down from 16 percent in summer 2000. Family groups were way up, to 46 percent from 28 percent two years ago. In addition, 41 percent of Po’ipu’s visitors booked a complete package including airfare, up from 35 percent two years ago. Summer-time visitors this year were a little wealthier, with 38 percent bringing in over $125,000 a year in household income. August 2002 also brought more shoppers, snorkelers, kayakers, surfers, and helicopter riders.
