Former president Bill Clinton is scheduled to travel to Kaua’i this morning to attend a Democratic Party rally at the Kaua’i Veterans Center in Lihu’e.
The visit is tied into the gubernatorial campaign of Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono and her Lt. Governor running mate, former state senator Matt Matsunaga.
Clinton will be the guest speaker at the event, which is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Hawaii Government Employees Association.
Between 11 a.m. and 11: 30 a.m., Hirono and Matsunaga are scheduled to be on stage to greet the public. The program is to include an eight-minute tribute to the late U.S. House Rep. Patsy Mink. Also on the schedule are speeches by Democratic Party candidates and HGEA officials, according to Diana Berrent, a member of Clinton’s advance staff who is helping to coordinate the rallies.
Clinton is scheduled to appear sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and is expected to urge residents to elect Hirono, Matsunaga and Democratic Party candidates, Berrent said.
“We encourage people to come before 11 a.m.. They will get the best seats,” Berrent said.
Free tickets will be available at the center on a “first-come-first-serve basis until we run out of them,” she said. The Veteran’s Center seats 800.
Clinton is scheduled to attend Democratic Party rallies on Maui and the Big Island Wednesday afternoon.
