OAHU – Kauaians Bruce Irons and Roy Powers advanced past the second round on opening day of the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park on Oahu.
Irons won the first round and placed second in his heat in round two to advance past round two. Powers was second in the first round and won his second round heat.
The Hawaiian Pro is the final event on the ASP men’s WQS calendar for 2002, and with its 6-star rating it is critical for surfers looking to qualify for next year’s WCT tour. Similarly, the Roxy Pro, which has not yet begun, is a 6-star event for surfers looking to move up.
The Hawaiian Pro is part of a the Vans Triple Crown Series, which includes three championship events in six extreme sports.
Joining Irons and Powers in advancing are Toby Martin (Aus.) and Danilo Costa (Brazil), among others.
Should the swell hold through the weekend, the first round of the $10,000 Davidoff Cool Water Xpression Session will see 20 of the world’s hottest surfers let loose in a display of radical and futuristic surfing maneuvers. Among those invited are Bruce Irons, his brother and current WCT points leader Andy Irons, Myles Padaca, Taj Burrow, Michael Picon and Russel Winter.
