High Schoolers face off at CJM Country Stables

POIPU – When they aren’t buried in books, they’re roping calves at the local ranch.

Thus is the life of a High School cowboy and cowgirl.

Before getting to work on Monday’s due homework assignments, the students trampled through CJM Country Stables in Poipu, competing for top bill at the Keiki and High School Rodeo.

The Keiki were also a main attraction on Sunday. Results for their events will be printed in Wednesday’s TGI edition.

Kristene Sugai won the High School Barrel Racing event, finishing in 35.17 seconds. Alana Brun placed second with a 41.67 and Kassie Wong was third with a 45.70.

Sugai also won the Breakaway Roping event in the time of 14.65 seconds. Wong was second with a 16.05 and Jessica Morris was third with a 20.00.

Skye Andrade took first in Pole Bending, edging Sugai with a 50.35. Sugai took second with a 58.60 and Morris was third with a 67.43.

Andrade also won the Goat Tying event, finishing in 26.75 seconds. Brun was second with a 33.08 and Wong was third with a 34.15.

Riley Pedro of Oahu took first in Steer Wrestling with a 30.03 second finish.

Daelen Decoito of the Big Island took top honors in Calf Roping, finishing in 82.62 seconds. Marcus Laymon was second with a 17.01 (1) and Kurtis Low was third with a 19.54 (1).

The duo of Low and Laymon stormed to a convincing win in the Double Mugging event, getting the job done in 28.57 seconds. The team of Morris and Louis Matias was second with a 48.14, and Randy Brun and Riley Pedro (Oahu) took third with a 54.86 finish.

Randy Brun won the Pu’u Wa U in the time of 23.1 seconds, edging Low’s 26.87 and Braiden Malicki’s (Big Island) 29.95.

And in the Dally Team Roping event, the Big Island team of Colby Costa and Daelen Decoito took first in 28.68 seconds, edging the team of Brun and Pedro, which finished in 33.90 seconds. The team of Low and Laymon finished third with a 9.95 (1).
