With 62.8 percent of those registered to vote exercising that right, the County of Kaua’i led the state in voter turnout at Tuesday’s general election.
Statewide turnout was 57 percent, and Kaua’i did better than all the individual counties as well, confirmed County Clerk Peter Nakamura.
Kaua’i also recorded one of the highest percentages of voters who filled out absentee ballots, 21.2 percent, or 7,938 citizens. Just over 16 percent of registered voters statewide, or 110,049 people, voted via absentee ballot.
The high percentage of absentee voters on Kaua’i eclipsed by far the 17.6 percent figure the county recorded during the primary election cycle (6,264 voters).
At Tuesday’s general election, voters on Ni’ihau recorded the highest precinct turnout, 56.7 percent, or 51 of the 90 registered voters there.
On Kaua’i, Kaumakani Neighborhood Center had the highest percentage precinct turnout, 52 percent, with 169 of the 325 registered voters showing up.
Voters at Eleele School were next in precinct turnout on this island, with 553 of the 1,119 registered voters showing up there, or 49.4 percent.
The lowest percentage turnout was recorded at Kapaa Neighborhood Center, 31.8 percent, where 602 of the 1,892 registered voters showed up.
Many of them, however, may have voted absentee.
