The Kaua’i County Council has amended a county law designed to control and widen public uses at county parks.
The action at the historic County Building last Thursday apparently comes in response to increased uses at parks brought on by a growing island population. The measure now goes to the mayor for consideration.
Among the key changes:
– People can bring air rifles and bows and arrows for contests if their activity is approved by the county engineer or his representative through a permit. Other firearms are not permitted.
– People cannot install aerial or special radio, telephone or television equipment that produce loud noises unless approved by the county engineer or his representative through a permit.
– People can lead or let loose dogs or domestic animals with approval only from the county engineer or his representative through a permit.
Through the proposed rule change, dog owners, for instance, could put on shows or training sessions at county parks.
– People cannot remove or dig up plants, shrubs or trees unless approved by the county engineer or his representative through a permit.
– People cannot abandon vehicles or personal property at parks.
– People cannot leave any vehicle or other personal property unattended at a park for longer than 24 hours.
– People can set up “quick tents” no larger than 20 feet by 20 feet for an event without approval by the county.
But people who want to use larger tents must obtain permission from the county engineer or his representative through a permit.
– People can use roller skates, roller blades and skateboards in certain areas of the park approved by the county engineer or his representative through a permit.
