Those wishing to be considered for nomination to the Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative board of directors by a nominating committee have only until next Tuesday, Dec. 10, to file paperwork.
That should be a one-page rsum and separate, one-page cover letter of interest, mailed to KIUC Nominating Committee, 4463 Pahee St., Lihu’e, HI 96766-2032. Anyone who is a bill-paying member of KIUC, formerly Kauai Electric, is eligible to apply.
The nominating committee members will review qualifications of interested applicants, and announce their selection of nominees on Friday, Dec. 20.
Another way to get on the ballot is to get signatures of 35 other members.
Qualified KIUC members may be nominated by collecting 35 signatures of other members in good standing, and by submitting a completed member petition to the nominating committee by Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
The election of a new KIUC board of directors will take place Saturday, Feb. 15, and will be conducted by the same company that has conducted the state’s primary, general and special elections for the past few years.
Directors of KIUC will be elected to six-year terms, and govern the business and affairs of the co-op, but are not involved in day-to-day operations of the utility.
The board is a policy-making body that approves annual budgets and proposed rate changes, and decides on the recruiting and hiring of KIUC’s chief executive officer and attorney.
Election Systems & Software, Inc. (ES&S), based in Omaha, Neb., has been chosen by KIUC to conduct the election. It is the world’s largest election management company, and has held the contract for all statewide elections since 1998.
The company also conducted the first special election last Saturday, and the second special election to replace the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink (D, rural O’ahu, Neighbor Islands), set for Saturday, Jan. 4.
ES&S has counted approximately 60 percent of the U.S. vote for the past four presidential elections, also.
“Because they are the world’s most experienced provider of total election management solutions, we feel very confident our first election will run smoothly,” said Faye Akasaki, KIUC manager of customer service.
“They will provide full-service election management, and ensure process integrity from start to finish by providing election programming, ballot production, counting and tabulation,” she said.
“We anticipate our first election will set the bar for all future elections, and we feel ES&S will lead us in that effort,” said Akasaki.
