WAIMEA – The Red Raider boys junior varsity squad opened the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation boys junior varsity basketball season with an impressive come-from-behind 57-47 road win over the Menehune Tuesday evening at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium.
The Raiders trailed by two at the half but came back and took over. They outscored the Menehune 35-23 in the second two periods.
Kaua’i was led by Brandon Ballesteros, who had 10 points. Josh Bradbury had 9 points and Garrett Sakimae and Kalau Hammond each added 8 points.
Waimea’s Aaron Hesapene led all scorers with 13 while teammate James Henriques dropped in 10 points in a losing effort.
The Menehune (0-1) travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym on Friday, January 10, for the Kapa’a Warrior season home opener, with junior varsity action slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
The Raiders (1-0) host the Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Kaua’i High Gym in Lihu’e.
