LIHUE – It was a happy day for KIF Soccer – as long as you weren’t a Menehune.
The Kapa’a Warriors raced to their first win – a 4-1 decision over Waimea – and clinched the Kaua’i Red Raiders the 2003 Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation Boy’s Soccer Title Thursday at Vidihnha Stadium in Lihue.
Left behind were the Waimea Menehune, now 2-4 and out of contention for the title.
The Raiders, who have outscored the KIF 8-3 in 5 games thus far, are undefeated and out of reach for the rest of the league with just three games remaining on the schedule. The Kapa’a Warriors improve their record to 1-4 with the win.
The Raiders watched their title hopes come true in a flash of green and white.
Gabe Sarsona and Keala Swain scored the first two goals for the Warriors, sinking the Menehune in a debilitating drain before the half.
Desmond Rodrigues knocked in a penalty kick to climb Waimea to within one, but Billy Toy drilled in a goal and Waika (Jackson) Oliver cleaned up his own missed penalty shot to give the Warriors a comfortable 4-1 advantage.
Oliver led a tough defensive Warrior front which kept Waimea at bay throughout the match.
The Raiders will play three more games to close out the season before they head to the HHSAA State Soccer Championships.
On Saturday, they face Kapa’a at Vidinha Stadium. It is the last game of the third round and will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Kapa’a swamps Waimea; Kaua’i closing in on title
The Kapa’a Warrior girls also helped the Kaua’i Red Raiders on Thursday, but didn’t hand them the title just yet.
The Warrior girls routed the Menehune 6-1 yesterday to put Kaua’i in the position to close out the KIF Championship with a win at Vidinha Stadium on Saturday. The Raiders (4-1), have to lose all of their last three games in order to allow for a playoff situation.
Like the boys, the Warrior girls came out firing on offense. Kelly Devitt chipped in the first score, and teammate Virginia Fajardo added a score off a corner to put the Warriors up 2-0 at the half.
Kapa’a poured it on in the final period. Liana Kakalia answered with two consecutive goals at the onset of the second to give Kapa’a a 4-0 lead.
Larisa Nebre scored Kapa’a’s fifth goal after a corner kick set her up in scoring position. Moments later, Waimea’s Tori Kagawa chipped in Waimea’s only goal on an assist from Laurese Rosare, and to insure the victory, Danielle Hill knocked in a shot to put Kapa’a up 6-1.
