WAIMEA — Top Kauai rodeo riders gathered in sunny Waimea Saturday to compete in the Paniolo Challenge.
The event was hosted by the Keiki and High School Rodeo Association in cooperation with the West Kauai Business Association.
Admission was free to the public.
Sumike Falque captured the barrels competition, with a fast 19.62 run, besting Curtis Low who clocked 19.84 earlier.
Other events included the 3-person relay, with each rider making a circular run, passing the baton within a restricted zone, and competing against the clock.

The WKBA hosts a full calendar of events throughout the year, including the popular Waimea Town Celebration, also includes rodeo action.
Besides the rodeo events, Saturday’s Paniolo Challenge featured a day of events unique to the paniolo lifestyle on the Westside. The paniolo heritage of Kauai, as an island with a unique tradition in the statewide paniolo world, was also highlighted. A paniolo Hall of Fame is also associated with the nearby West Kauai High Technology ad Tourism Center.
