LIHU‘E — At 8 a.m. yesterday, Home Depot officials began taking applications for employment.
By 7:15 a.m., nearly 100 people were in line already.
All told, over 400 people turned out for the anticipated 100-plus jobs that will be available in advance of the October opening of the Home Depot in Kukui Grove Village west, near Kukui Grove Center.
“The response has been phenomenal, both at the job fair recently (at Kukui Grove Center), and today,” said Leonard Peters, Home Depot store manager.
In between accepting applications and taking care of hundreds of other items associated with the store opening, Peters said he anticipates hiring over 100 people for positions in the Kaua‘i store, and noted that there will be shift options for potential employees.
Company officials will fill positions for overnight stockers, also, create employment options for people interested in late-night work.
People started lining up from about 7:15 a.m. yesterday for the process of filling out applications and being assigned pre-employment interview sessions beginning next Monday, Aug. 25.
“I dropped my son off at 7:15, and I thought I would be the first in line,” said one parent. “But there were already people here. At least I was the first on the list.”
Applicants for the second week’s sessions will be taken starting at 8 a.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 19, in a tent set up in the parking lot of the store.
Bryan Garcia, one of the Home Depot staff members taking applications, said that once the employment force is established, they will start work on setting up the store in time for the planned October opening.
They will be assisted by crews sent over from other stores already open for business.
Home Depot’s Kaua‘i location will have 125,000 square feet of retail space, including an extensive garden section.
