The Kauai Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in a chain of vandalism attacks stretching from the main guest parking lot at the Hyatt Regency Kaua’i Resort to Spouting Horn Park’s women’s room late Saturday night, August 23. Other defacement of bathrooms in Waimea Canyon Park were reported to the police on August 26 .
“It was a blatant act of kolohe,” said Sergeant Carl Oliver of the KPD.
According to the KPD, an unknown number of assailants sprayed around ten cars in the Hyatt main entrance parking lot with red paint. They are then suspected of moving through Po’ipu, spraying cars at Whaler’s Cove and the bathroom at Spouting Horn.
“I do not know what is prompting this” outbreak of vandalism, said Lieutenant Asher of the Kauai Police Department. Although they are assuming the acts in Po’ipu are related due to the use of same-color spray paint, “the investigation is ongoing,” the lieutenant said.
According to police, Hyatt security first spotted the vandalized cars and called the police at 1:30 A.M. In the course of his investigation, Officer Dean Martin spotted other cars with red paint at Whaler’s Cove. On Sunday morning, vendors at Spouting Horn called to report more spray paint in the women’s bathroom, Sgt. Oliver said. All these were done with red paint, although some yellow was used in the Spouting Horn restroom.
The number “420” was sprayed on the walls of the restroom, while lines were sprayed across the cars, Sgt. Oliver said. He added that “420” is a reference to smoking marijuana.
There were also some graphic terms on the bathroom walls, said Lt. Asher.
While he would not comment on the specific acts of vandalism, Gerald C. Gibson, General Manager for the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort and Spa, said in a statement, “It is most unfortunate that the island of Kauai is faced with this problem in an otherwise unspoiled community. Obviously, it is of great concern to us, and we have recently increased our own security measures on property. We are constantly on alert for ways to reduce crime and related activity in the Po’ipu area.”
If you have any information regarding the vandalism, contact Crime Stoppers at 241-6787. Callers can remain anonymous.
