A 27-year-old Kekaha male was seriously injured Monday when the SUV he was driving was broadsided by a southbound van on Kuhio Highway as its driver attempted to make a left turn from Mailihuna Road in Kapa‘a.
The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. The SUV was identified as a Nissan. The model was not known. The other vehicle was a full-sized van. The driver of the van was not seriously injured, police said.
According to Kauai Police Department Traffic Safety Lt. Scott Yagihara, the SUV’s airbags did not inflate, possibly because airbags normally inflate after a front-end impact.
It was not known whether the SUV driver was wearing a seat belt. He was transported to the emergency room at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and stabilized for critical injuries. He was transported via air ambulance to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Late Wednesday, he was listed in critical condition at Queen’s.
The 22-year-old man injured in an unrelated traffic crash Monday at about 5:25 a.m. on Ka Haku Road in Princeville, was released from Wilcox after being treated for unspecified injuries.
At the time of the crash, the man was traveling west on Ka Haku Road in a red Chevy pickup. The truck left the roadway and hit the end of a guardrail located just past the Ka Eo Kai condominiums. The guardrail punctured through the cab of the truck.
