The Kapa‘a High School JV defense generated a pair of scores as the Warrior JV surged past the Waimea High School JV 14-6 on Friday afternoon at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kekoa Hermosura started the defensive fireworks with a fumble recovery in the second quarter that set up the first Warrior JV score followed by three interceptions of Kenny Estes’ aerials gracing the victory.
Warrior JV QB Waylen Kupihea surged for a 1-yard score with 1:21 remaining in the half following a strong charge by Greg Ragsac that set up the score following the Hermosura fumble recovery deep in Menehune territory.
Cory Salausa upped the score with a PAT boot, 7-0 at the half.
Kai Kanoho continued the defensive fireworks with a third quarter interception that set up the second Kapa‘a score that lit up the boards on a short Kupihea to Pokii Valeria pass (8 yards) with 7:06 remaining in the frame.
That score was highlighted by a long Kupihea to Cody Mikami pass down the right sidelines that ignited the growing field of Warrior supporters.
Another Salausa PAT kick gave Kapa‘a a 14-0 lead that remained until Waimea’s Estes found Blayne Vea in the end zone for six points with 1:10 left in the contest.
The point-after pass from Estes was plucked by Kapa‘a’s Calen Tagawa for the final 14-6 reading.
Despite the loss, the Menehunes had some moments on the field highlighted by the strong ball carrying of Nash Danley-Bermoy.
Waimea travels to Vidinha Stadium this Friday for a matchup against the Kaua‘i Red Raiders.
Kickoff time is 5 p.m.
