WAILUA — While a group of ladies enjoyed some hanafuda, a Japanese card game, others took in the sunshine in the horseshoe pits or enjoyed other activities at the annual Seniors Field Day at Lydgate Park here yesterday.
The ladies in the card game used straw mats to cover the picnic tables in the main pavilion to give them better “feel” for the cards, they said.
County officials had a difficult time determining winners in a contest where participants created products using recycled materials, and seniors enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, playing other card games, other indoor and outdoor games, or just talking story.
The event was coordinated by the county’s Agency on Recreation in the Offices of Community Assistance, and attracted over 200 senior citizens from senior centers from Kekaha to Kilauea.
Senior George Kahalekomo watched as teammate Lisa Vallejos of the county’s Agency on Recreation showed fine form on her horseshoe pitch, while seniors Mabel Timmerman, Margaret Nakamura and Viola Lozito showed off the artistic train they created for the recycling contest.
