LIHU‘E — Waimea defensive pressure on Kapa‘a JV quarterback Kai Kanoho forced an early pass in the second quarter resulting in Waimea’s Dustin Rita going high to intercept the aerial on the Warriors’ 11-yard line.
Nash Danley-Bermoy, the Menehune workhorse on the gridiron, moved the pigskin to the Kapa‘a 6, but a low block penalty against Waimea withdrew the ball back to the Kapa‘a 26, from where Waimea signal caller Kenny Estes launched an air hit to Rita bringing the ball to the Kapa‘a 12. Alex Schonberg picked up the action for a four-yard charge to the Warriors’ 8, and coupled with a face mask infraction against Kapa‘a, the ball finally nestled inside the Kapa‘a 5-yard line where the Warrior defense stiffened, forcing a Bermoy field goal attempt from 22 yards out.
The ball soared harmlessly, but another costly penalty against Kapa‘a gave Waimea second life on the Warrior 2-yard line where Estes took the ball on the first snap for Waimea’s second TD with 6:56 showing in the half. The Bermoy point-after boot failed for the 13 – 0 math.
Estes broke a 0 – 0 stalemate with 4.6 seconds showing in the first quarter for Waimea’s first score with Bermoy booting the PAT for the 7 – 0 bulge.
Waimea will host Kaua‘i this Friday at Hanapepe Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
