The Waimea Menehunes once again took first place for the boys and girls air rifle teams and will be representing the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation in the state air rifle championships Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
The Menehunes have been coached by Major Vic Aguilar who will also accompany both teams to O’ahu. There are also four other individual shooters representing each of the other schools at the state championships.
The Waimea Girls team is comprised of the following: Jonelle Renti Cruz (234.50 season average), Sheila Ann Ramos (233), Ashley Shimono (232), Megan Mukai (231.25), and Waimea alternate, Mitsi Seto (221).
There are two additional girls shooting as individuals at the state championships: senior Jeni Guerber of Island School (240.75) and 11th grader Terra Bell of Kaua’i High School (231). Each will compete with other individuals at the state competition to see if they can achieve top individual honors.
The Waimea Menehune Boys cinched first place and will be represented at state by the following shooters: Kori Sakahashi (246.75 season average), Brian Martin (246.50), Anthony Acain (236.25), and Donovan Mangube-Glover (228), as well as alternate John Tagavilla (224.75).
Kaua’i High will also be sending senior Bryce Hamamoto (236 average) and Kapa’a High senior Joel Miyashiro (229.25) to compete as individual shooters.
All shooters will test their own personal ability to concentrate and compete against the best in the state. Their ability to be steady and accurate and to hit a target a little bigger than a silver dollar at 33 feet twenty times for each position will determine the best in the state.
Each individual shooter will have to shoot 20 record shots in prone (laying down), standing, and kneeling. Each stage or position will have a maximum time limit of 30 minutes for prone, 40 minutes for standing and 30 minutes of kneeling.
The state air rifle competition will be the truest test of endurance, concentration and steady nerves. We wish them the very best in representing all of Kaua’i.
