LIHU‘E — “It’s the best of the best,” one soccer fan said, describing the Wil Veeck Soccer Tournament that opened Monday evening at Vidinha Stadium.
Excitement dominated the air as the U12 Girls from Kalaheo and Kapa‘a battled to a 1 – 1 deadlock, settling the score in a shootout following regulation play with Marley Bukoski’s boot whizzing past Kalaheo goalie Bryanna Prinzing settling the outcome, 2 – 1 in favor of the Kapa‘a Green Xtreme.
Jessica Lactaotao, who did goalie duties for Kapa‘a in the shootout, opened the scorebooks in the 24th minute as her shot attempt deflected off the Kalaheo goalie’s hands and into the goal.
Kalaheo put the pressure on the contest forcing Kapa‘a into a defense mode during the second half, and after repeated shot attempts, the Hot Chicks got on the scorebooks as Destiny Banasihan’s free kick deflected off goalie Tyra-Lynn Hepa’s hands for the stalemate in the 43rd minute.
The action continued as the undefeated Kilauea Home Doggies went on to edge Lihu‘e Na Wahine 1-0 behind a goal from Olivia Ruff who got an assist from Megan Ohlen in that defensive slugfest.
Elijah Nelson notched goals in the first and second half to lead the Northshore Gremio to a 7-1 win over the Kalaheo Mixed Plate in the U14 Boys finale.
Dylan Goodale, Parker Blaylock, Cyrus Ogawa, Bryson Morrow, and Dylan James also notched goals for Northshore while Mana Shigematsu broke the goal plane for Mixed Plate.
With the win by Kapa‘a and Kilauea in the U12 girls’ games, the two teams will meet Wednesday evening at Vidinha starting at 5 p.m.
