The Ed Kawamura ohana got together this week for a day of fellowship and reunion as they created the traditional Japanese New Year’s rice cake delicacy known as mochi.
Most Asian households in Hawai‘i celebrate some sort of reunion during this weekend preceding the New Year, the date being a significant one in the Oriental culture.
During the get togther they make mochi as the younger family members get an opportunity to carry on the tradition by learning the secret of making good mochi from the kupuna.
Although many traditional methods of making mochi have been replaced by advances in Western technology, the traditional fellowship and reunion remains the same.
