Walton breaks out for 17 points
Basil Walton led the Lihu‘e Breakaway charge with 17 points to rout the Rim Rocker “A” 64-18 in boys 14-and-under KYBA action on May 27 at Kalaheo Gym.
The Rim Rockers were led by Hino Kanahele, who scored 10 of his team’s 18 points.
In the second contest of the evening, Tyrus Ceria-Lux exploded for 20 points to lead his Kalaheo Piston’s squad to a 27-24 win over the Kapa‘a Warriors.
Devin Saiki and Thomas Patch each scored six points for the Warriors.
In a close battle to the end, the Rim Rockers “B” edged the C-Town Timberwolves, 32-31.
Kaimana Girod lead all scorers with 11 points for the Rim Rockers and Telia Huni finished with nine points to lead the Timberwolves.
Meanwhile out in Kilauea, Matthew Viescas notched 15 points to lead the Westside Hornets over the Kanu Hustlers, 31-20 in boys 12-and-under action.
Kapano Cummings led the Husters with nine points.
Clareson Torres put up 14 points for the Westside Hornets to lead his team to a 43-17 debacle against Wailua II in a boys 14-and-under contest.
Jin Wu led Wailua II with eight points.
‘Bows Fall 8-0 in Series Opener at San Jose State
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball team (31-22, 13-14 WAC) fell to the San Jose State Spartans (21-31-1, 9-19) 8-0 in front of a crowd of 569 at Municipal Stadium Friday. Ricky Bauer (8-4) took the loss while SJSU’s Matt Durkin (8-5) pitched a complete-game shutout to get the win.
Andrew Sansaver went 2-for-3 to lead the Rainbow effort at the plate while Matthew Inouye was 1-for-2 with a walk.
The Spartans got on the board early in the first inning as Kevin Frandsen hit a triple to left field before scoring on a sacrifice fly.
The Spartans then added four unearned runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to make it 7-0 after six innings of play.
SJSU added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth with another run to make it 8-0 going into the ninth inning.
The Rainbows were able to load the bases in the ninth but Durkin was able to finish off his masterpiece, leaving the ‘Bows without a run on the board.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at Blethen Field at 3 p.m. with Stephen Bryant pitching against SJSU’s Corey Cabral.
Summer Junior Tennis Clinic
The third annual summer junior tennis clinic is happening on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 -6 p.m. and on Sundays, 12-3:00 p.m., beginning Tuesday, June 8.
Ages 8 to 17 are welcomed and shoes are required. The fee to enter is $25.00, which is the annual club membership plus one can of tennis balls.
