Sylvia Pippen of Waimea, who specializes in appliqué quilts of tropical flowers embellished with Japanese sashiko and embroidery, leads a quilt workshop this Sunday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kalaheo School.
An experienced teacher and co-author with Kitty Pippen of “Asian Elegance Quilting with Japanese Fabrics and More,” Sylvia Pippen will teach participants how to make small wall quilts combining Japanese sashiko stitching with appliqué.
Sashiko techniques will be taught so that participants can learn how to make a background design. Hand appliqué methods include needle turn, paper-pieced, and ironing over Templar plastic.
