LIHU‘E n Armed with 1300 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts that had been sold to supporters of the Kaua‘i Inline Hockey Association, players, volunteers, and coaches were on hand Friday at the Wal-Mart parking lot for pickups.
The Mites and Peewee teams recently captured the state championships which made them eligible to participate in the national competition which takes place in Atlanta, Georgia later this month.
Because of the number of orders awaiting pickup, the group relocated from the front of the store to an area in the back of the parking lot to minimize traffic congestion in the normally busy area.
“Besides, it has shade,” one parent chimed in, relishing the cool breezes that swept through the area.
There was a steady stream of cars that cruised past the area, the pickup process streamlined as the driver, or passenger flashed their tickets and were almost instantly serviced by an inline hockey player with the required number of cartons.
Free sale was opened up at 5 p.m. to allow all ticket holders an opportunity to redeem their purchases.
Also due to the large quantity of doughnuts, the group was aided by the Hawaiian Airlines cargo facility which allowed them to keep the doughnuts in their coolers until needed.
“Only ten days to go,” one hockey player added while fishing out a carton of a dozen of the delicacy.
The group will be departing Kaua‘i on July 26 for the national competition. Coach Todd Fuerte, one of the coaches for the group said the group stands a good chance of doing well at the national competition, noting that many of former players give back to the program by coming out to help the younger players.
